A Boeing E-4B “Nightwatch” — one of four hardened, nuclear-survivable 747-200s that become the “National Airborne Operations Center” for the President and Secretary of Defense in a national emergency: shielded against the electromagnetic pulse of a nuclear blast, refuelable in flight to stay aloft for days, with one jet kept “cocked” on alert around the clock.
